Adieu JLG: The Image Book (Le Livre d’image)

Adieu Godard – two films by Godard and one by Rohmer (in which the twenty-year-old Jean-Luc Godard stars). This farewell is far from being done. 

Godard’s last feature film – essay – in which we can find most of the characteristic features of his late work: deliberately broken drafts of connections, references to the self-reflexivity of the medium of film and the uncompromising modification of image and sound. The film mixes news headlines, paintings, digitally distorted excerpts from classic Hollywood films and brutal ISIS YouTube propaganda, primarily points to the alienation and macroaggressions of the contemporary world. The artwork, in which the influence of cultural theories and conceptual art are undeniable, proves that Jean-Luc Godard believed in the irreplaceable role of cinema. The dissonant The Image Book was awarded the Special Grand Jury Prize for the first time in the history of the Cannes festival.
