The Art & Experiment section of last year’s edition of the Oberhausen festival showcases some of the most intriguing films by filmmakers working between film and other media.

At the beginning of the selection, in Perforated Realities, Gustaf Broms asks how Covid-19 could shake the base of the idea of civilization.

Germany 2021, 16’, English language, directed by: Katrin Winkler

In you cannot trust the colors, Katrin Winkler uses private photos of missionaries who accompanied colonizations in Africa to explore the question of how the color scheme of the photos came about and how it is shaped by the power structures of various colonizing actors.

It grew fur again, lost it, developed scales, lost them is an essay film by Gitte Villesen who explores two ideas which came out of two different works of feminist sci-fi.

In the film Grandma’s Scissors the filmmaker Erica Sheu continues her connection with her grandma and grandmother’s craft through using her own skills.

Romania 2021, 16’, no dialogue, Directed by: Corina Andrian

The dance film Dancen, made in Wuppertal (Germany), looks at the ephemeral impulses which live between individual moments of the day.

 

Films in this selection showcase the current state of media art.
