The film is an adaptation of a short story by Haruki Murakami. Júsuke Kafuku is a famous theater actor and director, passionate about driving his red Saab 900. During his engagement at the festival in Hiroshima he has to leave this joyous activity to the young and quiet driver Misaki.  

During the test drives they both unexpectedly find out what connects them is not only the joy of driving. Together they find a way to deal with their traumas and feelings of guilt – and how to continue living their lives. Drive My Car by Rjúsuke Hamaguči is an atmospheric film full of mysteries, searching for human understanding and reconciliation. The film was awarded Best Screenplay at the Cannes Festival 2021.
