Directed by Alice Diop, FR, 2022, 115 min., French with English subtitles
RER B is a city train that passes through Paris and its outskirts from north to south. A touching testament to the importance of filming as a process of bearing witness and collecting memory, the film We is subtle and smart in the world that prefers shortcuts and simple answers. Diop justifiably accepted the fragmented structure of the patchwork portrait to describe the divided society, and also showed impressive control over her essay and its effects.
In the first minutes of the film a deer is observed through binoculars. Isolation, discrimination and nostalgia for hierarchies inherited from the history of monarchy – today’s France is haunted by discrepancies. However, human instinct to give and receive is stubbornly creeping its way into each observed or staged situation.
Could it be the only thing that holds the nation together?
