The year 1945 was a pivotal one (and not only) in British history. The solidarity that helped Britain survive the war, together with the bitter memories of the pre-war years, brought people together to share a vision of a better society. Director Ken Loach has used film material from British regional and national archives, along with footage and contemporary interviews, to create a layered and vivid narrative built against the backdrop of the socio-political events of the time. The Spirit of the Forties seeks to illuminate and celebrate a period of unprecedented popular spirit whose influence endured for many years, and which can be rediscovered today.
