The Kafkaesque process of reconstruction of the Slovak National Gallery lasted more than ten years. For too long it seemed that the light at the end of the tunnel and the completion of the building would remain in sight. For all these years, Alexandra Kusá, the director of the gallery, together with her father, the architect of the reconstruction, and her colleagues, have been fighting to make the dream of a modern cultural institution come true for Slovak society. A crazy roller coaster of political pitfalls, delayed permits and battles with builders has led Alexandra Kusá to question more than once whether her efforts are even worthwhile.
