April 15

ESC volunteers for our media team wanted!

We are looking for four volunteers for an European Solidarity Corps project for 12 months: Sept. 2019 – Sept. 2020.

The deadline for applications (CV and motivation letter): April 22nd 2019.

Volunteer profile

We are looking for volunteers with an interest in art, culture and society. They want to be part of a creative team and learn how an independent cultural organisation works. In this context, they are working in a team and bring in pro-active energy. The volunteers are flexible: the work schedule depends on the program of events. So volunteers sometimes have to work during the weekend and in the evening. In return he/she will get free days during the week. The time schedule will be adjusted according to the needs of the volunteer and the staff of A4.

We are looking for volunteers who are interested in at least one of the following topics. In this he/she will be more specialized:

Creating photo and video documentation of the events and activities we organize (concerts, theater, dance performances, exhibitions, so on). The volunteers will also be responsible for uploading the photos on our web gallery. We do not provide the camera or the PC for editing, so the volunteers should bring their own.

Writing reviews and reports from the events for the A4 zine (in English). Our previous volunteers started a zine which is created completely by the ESC-volunteers, from design to text. The A4 staff assists the volunteers in this. The zine is in English and is mainly focused on promoting A4 for the English speaking audience of Bratislava. Every month, the creativity of the volunteers will result in this zine which will be printed and distributed in the city, together with our monthly promo materials.

Being a technical assistant. This includes preparing the lights and sound in preparation of and during concerts, theater performances and other events.

Tasks

All the volunteers will be involved in the processes related to everyday operation of an independent cultural venue. The most important in this are promotion and production. For the promotion of the venue, volunteers will help with the A4 social networks, distributing posters in the city (2 times per month), basic graphic design, website, etc. For production, the volunteers will sell tickets before the events, are the host of the foreign artists who play in our space, prepare basic technical equipment, etc. Besides this, the volunteers help at the cafe, help with the little garden in the backyard, do some small administration tasks and more. Every month the volunteers organize an event called WhatEVS which is aimed at promoting ESC and connects (international) volunteers in Slovakia.

Other activities depend on mutual discussion and on individual preferences, background and profile of the volunteer. They can develop their own project which makes sense and fits with our program (for example workshop, exhibition, blog, movie, etc). In short, the activities are very varied and there is a lot of space to discuss preferences of the volunteer. We are looking for volunteers with a creative approach who will be dedicated and actively look for new tasks and activities.

The structure of activities depends on the season – The peak of the events is in the autumn (dance festivals, music festivals, a lot of different theater performances and so). We also give the volunteers opportunity to take part in other projects, workshops and organizations if they are interested.

A4 – Space for Contemporary Culture is an independent, non-commercial center for contemporary culture in the center of Bratislava. It is oriented towards creation, presentation and education in present-day forms of theater, dance, music and film, contemporary visual culture and new media art. Since its beginning, A4 has a unique position in the cultural life of the city and has managed to create a very creative and inspiring environment around itself. A4 is a member of the Trans Europe Halles network of independent cultural centers and Antena (network of independent cultural centers on a national level) and operates as a vital cultural node, both locally and internationally.

The target group is oriented mainly towards the youth and adult audience even though there is no age limit for visitors. We have some events for families with kids (fine arts workshop for small kids, lectures for teenagers, screenings for families etc). We started with lectures in the field of fine arts, public art, music, performance art. Since 2004, the productivity of A4 can be proved by more than 2000 organized cultural events, presenting and initiating innovative artistic creation. Music programming is focused on cutting-edge expressions of contemporary music. A4 cinema club offers the screenings of artistic films which are usually not shown elsewhere in the region.
