Negativland: Sonic Outlaws

Director: Craig Baldwin, USA, 87 min., English

Probably the most famous film made by the legend of experimental films Craig Baldwin is devoted to the case of Negativland whose use of U2 songs resulted in long litigation between two unequal players. Sonic Outlaws is not a recap of one story, but multilayered collage and reflection about what it’s art. Baldwin demonstrated that the transformation of existing materials is also an art, whether it is called collage, remix, or found footage. Although the movie was created 20 years ago, at its core is a dispute between different understanding of copyright which is still current problem.
