CinemAfrica: Rafiki

entry: voluntary entry

directed by Wanuri Kahiu, KE, 82 min., Swahil with English subtitles

Rafiki shows Africa as we don’t see in often: urban, full of colors, music and joy – despite opening complex topics. Rafiki is the story of two young women in Kenya who fall in love in the begrudging conservative environment. It is a story of first love in a country where the LGBT + rights are strongly denied. Director Wanuri Kahiu works with the traditional culture of the region and transforms it into its modern version. The film is full of candy colors and songs, sometimes coming close to being a musical. Despite various obstacles, it manages to show the joy of living in Nairobi.

In cooperation with French Institute.
