/closed/ OPEN CALL – Actress in an experimental film

/ Thanks for your interest! We’ve found the actress for this role, so the open call is now closed. /

My name is Paula, and I am a filmmaker from Spain with a degree in Audiovisual Communication and previous experience in various audiovisual projects. I am currently working at A4 for a year as part of the European Solidarity Corps volunteering program. During this time, I am excited to develop my next creative project: a short experimental film, which I aim to submit to film festivals later this year and next. I am looking for an actress to play the main character. The filming will take place over two days at Čunovo Lake and at A4. If you’re eager to be part of this unique creative journey, I’d love to hear from you!

Synopsis

When we tell a story, we shape it with our own perspective, yet we intentionally leave room for interpretation—a gap where meaning lingers unsaid. Each telling is just one version, never the final word. We rely on the listener to hear what is left unspoken, to grasp the meaning within the silences.

It’s often easier to question the world around us than to turn that scrutiny inward. This film follows a nonconformist woman who must let go of who she is and who she aspired to be, in order to discover something entirely new about herself. Guided by her grandmother, miracles, and the sea, she confronts her deepest fears before they can return to haunt her.

Intention notes

I reflect on the contrasting beliefs within my family, particularly those of my grandmother and mother. My grandmother, with her faith in red candles, lights them for luck—a tradition I believe I’ll continue. My mother, on the other hand, trusts in the power of the present, in what we can do with our own hands and words. I find myself caught between these two influences, embodying a mix of both the mystical and the practical.

Like cats who love being half in and half out, I embody both the wild and the domesticated. I’m comfortable at home, but only if the door is open. I crave stability yet resist being confined to one place. Sometimes, you have to live in uncomfortable, temporary spaces—places that push you beyond your comfort zone and lead you to unexpected growth. Security can be stifling, and sometimes, there’s a deeper urge that drives you to seek more.

The intention of this experimental project is to primarily represent a playful atmosphere of nostalgia and desire through image composition and cinematography, carrying a depth metaphoric content behind the construction of each scene. The project follows a non-chronological sequence that blurs the lines between imagination and reality, contrasting the natural outdoor environment, as the lake, with dark interior of the studio space. The narrative oscillates between these two settings, viewed from the perspective of a woman who sees herself as both participant and spectator. As the story unfolds and questions come and go, the woman is compelled to find out whether it’s possible to navigate and face this world with kindness and naiveness.

Actress profile

  • A woman between 24-30 years old with brown hair; an expressive person.
  • Some experience in front of the camera is preferable, particularly in film projects.
  • Ability to speak and sing in Spanish. All the spoken lines are in (very basic) Spanish and it includes a lullaby. We will practise to achieve the desired tone.
  • Most importantly, we value enthusiasm and a willingness to work with an international team, so English is also required.
  • Available for 1 full day of filming at Čunovo lake in September and 1 full day or 2 half days of filming at A4 in October.
  • To take into consideration is that you will ride a bike and swim in the Čunovo lake. Only your face will be visible when swimming.

Offer

An honorary budget is available for the actress selected for this role. All the transport expenses of the actress are paid by the project, as well as provided food.
