directed by Sergei Loznitsa, DE, UA, FR, NL, RO, 2018, 121 min., Ukrainian with EN subtitles

In relation to the aggression of Russia on Ukraine we focus our attention on the Ukrainian filmmaker Sergei Loznitsa, who in his films continuously examines the socio-political relations in Russian, dynamics of power and evil and the force of propaganda. Film Donbass is horrifically acute today.

In Donbas, a region in the east of Ukraine, a hybrid war is happening – including open armed conflict and looting by gangs. In Donbas the war is called love, propaganda is articulated as truth and hate is announced to be love. It is not about one region, one country or one political system, it is about humanity and civilization in general. “It is a collection of episodes in which one character appears and moves us to another. My intention was to show different sides, different expressions and different aspects of the ever-present process of destruction and decay in each episode” says Loznitsa.
